SPORTS: Eden Hazard brings up Chelsea century

Image
Eden Hazard brings up Chelsea century Eden Hazard took his tally of Chelsea goals to 100 as he scored in the Blues' Premier League clash with Watford. Having ended an eight-match scoreless streak by netting in Chelsea's defeat of Brighton and Hove Albion 10 days ago, Hazard snatched the winner against Bournemouth in the EFL Cup quarter-finals. That effort took the Belgium international to 99 club goals and, after drawing a blank in Chelsea's loss to Leicester City, Hazard hit his century with the opening goal in a Boxing Day trip to Watford. Mateo Kovacic intercepted the ball on the halfway line and sent Hazard, again operating as a false nine for Maurizio Sarri's side, racing through on the Watford goal. And the forward made no mistake with the chance, rounding Hornets goalkeeper Ben Foster with ease before slotting the ball into the open goal. Hazard is the 10th Chelsea player to reach a landmark 100 goals for the club, but lags some way behind record ...

The killings came at the time when the governor of the state, Simon Lalong, was in Beijing, China, with President Muhammadu Buhari for the 7th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation scheduled to hold from September 3 to 4. The latest killings came barely 24 hours after the alarm raised by the Executive Director of Stephanos Foundation, a civil rights’ organisation, Mark Lipdo, of fresh plots by the herdsmen to attack some villages in the State. He said, “It is rumoured that the Fulani will sweep over Berom Land on (Sunday) September 2. Elections will not affect 2019 UTME – JAMB

Image
Elections will not affect 2019 UTME – JAMB The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has said that the 2019 general elections would not affect the board’s 2019/2020 examination. He made this remark while fielding questions from journalists shortly after delivering the 2018 Annual Sobo Sowemimo Lecture of the Abeokuta Club in Abeokuta. Oloyede said that since the Independent National Electoral Commission had given the dates of the elections, then the board would only need to adjust accordingly. “I don’t think there will be any need for a shift in the examination date because of the 2019 general elections. I believe INEC has done well by giving us a prior notice six months ago. “They have given us the date of the elections. So we have no excuse not to have adjusted. We have adjusted appropriately,” he said. Oloyede decried the rate at which candidates, who were not qualified to write the examination applied for it, the...

Image
EKITI 2018 GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION: SHOW OF SHAME AND RAPE OF DEMOCRACY. BY ANTHONY AKEJU akejuanthony1@gmail.com http://tonycharisma.blogspot.com Democracy is the most popular form of government, which has become a benchmark for measuring the level of socio-political civilization of any society or a nation in the international community. The word democracy is a derivative of two Greek words ‘demos’, meaning people, and ‘kratia’, meaning rule, which implies the ‘rule by the people’. Democracy is a difficult concept to define because of the relativity of its meaning to different societies. American scholar Larry Diamond defines democracy as a “Meaningful and extensive competition among individuals and organized groups (especially political parties) either directly or indirectly, for the major positions of governmental power in addition to popular participation in the electoral process and respect for the civil and political rights of the people”. Further attempt at ...

God won’t forgive me if I support Atiku for president – Obasanjo Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says ex-vice president Atiku Abubakar “can never enjoy” his support for a political office. Obasanjo, in an interview with  Premium Times,  said God will never forgive him if he backs Atiku’s presidential ambition. Atiku served as vice-president to Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007. He aspired to succeed Obasanjo in 2003 but the elder statesman went ahead to complete another term. By 2007 when Obasanjo’s second term ended, both men had fallen apart. Obasanjo’s alleged third term agenda was also said to have worsened their dispute. Obasanjo said he has no personal grudges against Atiku but only works with anyone “working for the good of Nigeria”. He said, “If I support Atiku for anything, God will not forgive me. If I do not know, yes. But once I know, Atiku can never enjoy my support.” “It is not a question of working with or not working with an individual. If you ar...

Image
Chelsea sack Conte as manager The long-running saga over Antonio Conte’s future appears to have been resolved with Chelsea sacking him as manager and appointing Maurizio Sarri, according to media reports on Thursday. The BBC said the 48-year-old Italian’s two year reign — which brought league success in 2017 and the FA Cup last season — was ending although they added Chelsea would not comment. However, Conte’s apparent dismissal drew a response from Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas, who liked a tweet a Chelsea fan posted about Conte having been sacked although the Spanish 2010 World Cup winner subsequently claimed he had liked it by accident. Conte leaves with the best win percentage 65.1% of any of Chelsea’s managers in the Premier League era. Former banker Sarri, 59, will be Chelsea’s ninth full-time manager since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003. Conte — who had a year to run on his contract — is seen to have contributed to his own demise by falling out both with the playe...
