Federal varsity Lokoja expels first class student, 12 others

The authorities of the Federal University, Lokoja, have expelled 13 final year students, including one with first class GPA, over alleged leakage of question papers that rocked the institution during the second semester examination in November last year.
The students, all from the Economics Department, were said to have been involved in purchasing the examination paper from a driver who worked in the department.
One of the students was said to be on the verge of bagging a first class with a cumulative grade point of 5.0.
The university is also investigating some staff said to be accomplices in the question leakage scandal, with a view to imposing appropriate sanctions on those found guilty.
This was disclosed on Monday by the institution’s vice chancellor, Prof. Angela Freeman Miri, at a press conference
Although the number of staff involved was not disclosed, she said that anyone found guilty will not be spared.
The VC of the six-year-old university said that the affected students have been given the right of appeal if they are not satisfied with the decision of the University Senate which approved their expulsion.
Miri said that the university had done proper investigation before arriving at the decision.
“No university that is worth its salt will compromise its examination standards; and the Federal University, Lokoja, will not be an exemption,” Prof. Mirri said.
She said the students had the opportunity to defend themselves before a disciplinary committee set up to look into the incident, and that their expulsion was ratified by the 47th Senate of the institution.

“The affected students were invited by the committee for questioning and the investigation committee found them guilty and then recommended them for expulsion,” she noted.
